Abstract:

Lecithin-Tween 80 (LT) vesicles and micelles were used to emulsify gasoline (87 octane) and crude oil (Pennsylvania crude oil) in artificial seawater. This dataset includes transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering data. Images of LT vesicles and micelles, emulsions after dispersal, and stabilized oil droplets are also included. Purpose:

The objective of this work was to demonstrate that aqueous self-assemblies of food-grade surfactants can be used to disperse oil as emulsions. We show that efficient and complete dispersion can be achieved at a surfactant concentrations that provide a monolayer on oil droplet interfaces. The surfactant system may prove useful in dispersing oil spills under high mixing conditions.
