Abstract:

​​​​This dataset contains (a) Cryo-SEM images of interfaces between seawater and crude oil treated with lecithin-Tween 80 marine oil dispersant, showing spontaneous emulsification at those interface; (b) X-ray electron dispersion spectroscopy data mapping the elemental composition of the cryo-SEM images; (c) light microscopy images of interfaces between seawater and crude oil treated with lecithin-Tween 80 marine oil dispersant, showing spontaneous emulsification at those interfaces; and (d) images of pendant drops in seawater of crude oil treated with lecithin-Tween 80 marine oil dispersant being subjected to droplet coalescence tests. Purpose:

Our objective is this work is to understand what interfacial phenomena, beyond interfacial tension, control the effectiveness of marine oil dispersants containing the surfactants lecithin and Tween 80. We show that lecithin-rich dispersants produce water-into-oil spontaneous emulsification which correlates with their higher effectiveness, and Tween 80-rich dispersants produce oil-into-water spontaneous emulsification which correlates with their lower effectiveness.

Data Parameters and Units:

The folder "Droplet Coalescence Tests" contains images and coalescence times from droplet coalescence tests. Note: 1 wt% surfactant corresponds to 1.25 wt% dispersant and 2 wt% surfactant corresponds to 2.5 wt% dispersant (because the dispersant is 80 wt% surfactant). Two needles with differing diameters were used. One needle was 26-gauge and the other needle was 27-gauge. These needles can be used to scale the videos as follows: 27-gauge needle: 409 um diameter 26-gauge needle: 466 um diameter The folder "July cryo-SEM" contains images and EDS compositional maps from cryo-SEM. Images files have corresponding txt files containing camera settings and time/date stamps. The folder "12Jul2016_4_2nm Pt_etching" contains cryo-SEM images of a 5 wt% dispersant, 20:80 L:T dispersant-oil mixture against seawater, for which the corresponding EDS may be found in the file "12Jul2016-1 2016-07-12 18.48.25" in the folder "EDS Word Files". The folder "13July2016_4 and 5_2nm Pt_etching" contains: In subfolder "4", cryo-SEM images of a 5 wt% dispersant, 80:20 L:T dispersant-oil mixture against seawater, for which the corresponding EDS may be found in the files "13Jul2014_4 and 5 2016-07-13 17.12.23", "13Jul2014_4 and 5 2016-07-13 17.32.08", and "13Jul2014_4 and 5 2016-07-13 17.39.34" in the folder "EDS Word Files". In subfolder "5", cryo-SEM images of a 5 wt% dispersant, 60:40 L:T dispersant-oil mixture against seawater, for which the corresponding EDS may be found in the files "13Jul2014_4 and 5 2016-07-13 16.59.05" and "13Jul2014_4 and 5 2016-07-13 17.03.31" in the folder "EDS Word Files". In subfolder "EDS Word Files": data type, image resolution, image pixel size (um), map resolution, map pixel size (um), acc. voltage (kV), magnification The folder "Light Microscopy" contains Top level folders' names state the L:T ratio and wt% dispersant of the dispersant-oil mixture imaged within them. Second-level folders' names state the magnification of the images and videos within them. Scales for the images and videos are as follows: images from light microscopy Images: 50x 1.84 pixels/um 100x 3.70 pixels/um 200x 7.43 pixels/um Videos: 50x 0.675 pixels/um 100x 1.36 pixels/um 200x 2.73 pixels/um Images of dispersant-oil mixtures containing 2.5 wt% dispersant or 5 wt% dispersant were taken 15-20 minutes after oil-water contact. Images of dispersant-oil mixtures containing 10 wt% dispersant were taken 60-65 minutes after oil-water contact.
