Abstract:

This dataset includes the meteorological data from the ship-mounted station and underway navigation data collected aboard the R/V F.G. Walton Smith cruise WS17121 in the Gulf of Mexico from 2017-04-30 to 2017-05-09. Underway and CTD data were collected for 9 days in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico while deploying EM-APEX floats that were instrumented to measure physical and biogeochemical parameters. The expedition started in Gulfport, MS, spent 9 days moving along two parallel deployment lines (including a weather delay), before heading to port in Miami, FL. Included in this dataset are the barometric pressure, longwave and shortwave irradiance, solar UV radiation, temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and ship navigation from the POSMV system. The complete navigation dataset from all onboard GPS can be found under GRIIDC UDI R5.x275.000:0008. These data are part of the Rolling Deck to Repository Program (DOI:10.7284/907283).

Purpose:

Meteorology data were collected to support research for air-sea interactions and determine atmospheric forcing conditions for the initial deployment of the EM-APEX floats.

All files include the date (MM/DD/YY) and computer time (HH:MM:SS). Barometer folder: barometric pressure (mbar), barometric pressure string. Eppley_PIR folder (Eppley Precision Infrared Radiometer): thermopile out, case temperature, dome temperature, longwave radiation (W/m^2). Eppley_PSP folder (Eppley Precision Spectral Pyranometer): Eppley PSP (shortwave irradiance, W/m^2), raw voltage. Eppley_TUV folder (Eppley Total Ultraviolet Radiometer): Eppley PSP (solar UV radiation, W/m^2), raw voltage. PortRMYoung folder (Port RM Young): air temperature (degrees C), humidity (%), barometric pressure (mbar), mnemonic, checksum, atmospheric string. RainGauge folder (OSI ORG-815 Rain Gauge): condition code (R- = light rain, R = moderate rain, R+ = heavy rain), instantaneous precipitation (mm/h), accumulated precipitation (mm), signal strength raw average, adaptive baseline, temperature (degrees C). StarboardRMYoung folder: seconds, relative wind speed (Knots), relative wind direction (degrees), true wind speed (knots), true wind direction (degrees), mnemonic, checksum.
