Abstract:

This dataset reports the underway Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and navigation data collected aboard the R/V F.G. Walton Smith cruise WS17121 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico from 2017-04-30 to 2017-05-09. The R/V F.G. Walton Smith cruise WS17121 went from Gulfport, MS to Miami, FL to deploy EM-APEX floats and was led by chief scientist Dr. Lynn Shay. ADCP data were measured to determine currents at deployment positions as well as along the cruise track for background conditions. These data are part of the Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) Program (DOI:10.7284/907283).

Purpose:

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler data to measure currents at deployment positions of EM-APEX floats as well as along cruise track for background conditions.

Data Parameters and Units:

Folder currents: ship meridional velocity component (vship; m/s), meridional velocity component (v; m/s), ship zonal velocity component (uship; m/s), zonal velocity component (u; m/s), ADCP transducer temperature (tr_temp; degrees Celsius), time (Decimal Day, days since 2017-01-01 00:00:00), percent good pings (pg), editing flags (pflag), longitude (degrees East), latitude (degrees North), ship heading (degrees), depth (m), received signal strength (amp). Folder POSMV: POSMV Navigational: computer time (MM/DD/YYYY), computer time (hh:mm:ss), GPS time, latitude and longitude (degrees minutes direction), altitude (m), geoid height, horizontal dilution, satellites, fix quality, speed over ground (SOG, knots), true heading, course over ground (COG, degrees), magnetic COG, mnemonic, checksum, GPS strings.

Methods:

All ADCP data were processed via the UHDAS system.
