Abstract:

During capture-release health assessments of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Barataria Bay, Louisiana from 2016-07-11 to 2017-09-21, veterinarians used ultrasound exams to identify pregnant females. To determine whether those pregnant dolphins successfully gave birth, field scientists conducted small vessel surveys approximately one year after each health assessment to find those pregnant dolphins and see whether they were accompanied by a neonate or young calf. This dataset catalogs the results of those reproductive outcome follow up surveys from 2016-2018.

Purpose:

In the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, scientists determined that oil exposure resulted in a reduction in reproductive success. These data can be used to estimate reproductive success in Barataria Bay, Louisiana and identify whether the impacts from the oil spill are lessening over time.

Data Parameters and Units:

Animal.ID (Unique dolphin identifier); Capture.date (Date of capture-assessment-release health assessment); Capture.latitude (Latitude of original capture-assessment-release health assessment, decimal degrees); Capture.longitude (Longitude of original capture-assessment-release health assessment, decimal degrees); Pregnancy.status (Was the dolphin pregnant during health assessment? Determined by ultrasound examination.); Est.due.date (Estimated due date based on extrapolating from ultrasound exam data.); Follow.up.sightings_n (Number of sightings during follow-up surveys); Follow-up.sightings.date.range (Date range of sightings during follow-up surveys); Pregnancy.outcome (Determination of pregnancy success/failure, where a success is defined as "observed with neonate more than two weeks after due date", failure as "observed without neonate more than two weeks after due date (for confirmed pregnancy only)", and CBD is "outcome could not be determined".)
