Abstract:

The SkIO glider Modena was deployed near GC600 from 2015-06-24 to 2016-07-14 in support of ECOGIG. Glider position during the deployment is typically within 20km of GC600 (approx. 90.58W 27.35N). Modena is a TWRC 200m Slocum glider equipped with a pumped CTD, Ecopuck triplet (flbbcd), and Aanderaa 4831 optode. Raw data have not been post-calibrated beyond factory CTD, Ecopuck, and oxygen calibration 2013.

Purpose:

Collect flight and science data near GC600 in support of ECOGIG ocean ecosystem research.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time [seconds, since 1990-01-01 00:00:00], latitude[degrees], longitude [degrees], present time [seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00], battery [volts], depth [m], relative battery charge [%], total horizontal distance [km], water depth [m], CDOM [ppb], chlorophyll_a [ug l-1], dissolved Oxygen [uM l-1], oxygen saturation [%], conductivity [S m-1], pressure [dbar], temperature [Celsius], salinity [], density [kg m-3].

Methods:

Data is uploaded as a tarball of flight and science raw data binaries, in the Teledyne Webb Research Company (TWRC) binary format (sbd/dbd for flight data, tbd/ebd for science data), which give values and units for each variable in the header. Flight data include ~2000 variables that monitor the flight and vehicle performance, including position (m_gps_lon/m_gps_lat) and water velocity averaged over the glider's path (m_water_vx/m_water_vy). A subset of these data is sent back to shore in real-time in sbd files, subsampled significantly to reduce data transfer time. Science data include CTD temperature, depth, conductivity, timestamp, dissolved oxygen concentration and percent saturation (as well as parameters from which it is calculated), and fluorometer-measured estimates of chl-a concentration, CDOM concentration, and optical backscatter. As with flight data, a subset of these data are sent back to shore in real-time in tbd files, subsampled significantly to reduce data transfer time. Variable names and units are given in headers of the -0.?bd files.
