Abstract:

A modeling study of the effect of bioirrigation and redox conditions on nitrogen isotope fractionation in sediments. Methods and model, as described in: Rooze J. and Meile C. (2016) The effect of redox conditions and bioirrigation on nitrogen isotope fractionation in marine sediments. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 184, 227-239. Data contains the model file (mph file, comsol version 4.4) - containing the baseline model implementation and an excel file containing the data parameter inputs for different simulations used in the sensitivity analysis.

Purpose:

The model was developed to evaluate the effect of bioirrigation on nitrogen isotope cycling in sediments. The excel file contains the parameter inputs that were used in the sensitivity analysis, which were performed to evaluate the effect of different parameters on the benthic nitrogen isotope effect.

Data Parameters and Units:

z is the depth [m], r is the radius[m]; k_DOM is reactivity dissolved organic matter [s^-1]; alpha_XXX are fractionation factors for specific reactions [-]; Q is the fluid injection rate [mL/min], O20 and NO30 are the bottom-water oxygen and nitrate concentrations [mol m^-3]; RminA is the areal particulate to dissolved organic matter conversion rate [mmol m^-2 d^-1].

Numerical modeling using comsol version 4.4.
