Abstract:

This dataset contains the stomach contents of dolphinfish caught by researchers and recreational anglers in the Western Gulf of Mexico in 2011. The carcasses were then processed in the lab where stomachs were removed and the contents were identified, counted, and weighed. Additional information reported in the dataset includes the sex, standard length (SL), total length (TL), and fork length (FL) of the catch. The contents of the dataset correspond to the publication: Brewton, R., Ajemian, M., Young, P.C., & Stunz, G.W. 2016. Feeding Ecology of Dolphinfish in the Western Gulf of Mexico. Purpose:

The diet of dolphinfish is largely unknown, and due to their fast growth and highly migratory nature of the species, these fish might have been impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A better understanding of the dolphinfish diet may help determine how much the species was impacted by the spill.

Data Parameters and Units:

Below is a list of data parameters for the dataset: DFCall# (Unique Identifier for each dolphinfish caught), Processing date (the date samples were taken from the fish), Sex (M,F), Lengths [SL(cm), FL(cm), TL(cm), TL(mm)], size class [defines the length bin the dolphinfish were categorized to and is based on TL(mm) (250-500, 501-750, 751-1000, 1251-1500)], prey species ID [coded reference for prey found in the stomachs of the dolphinfish (all codes available in the species codes tab)], common name (common name of the identified prey), Lowest Possible Taxon (lowest identifiable taxon of the identified prey), Family (family of the identified prey), Prey Class (class of the identified prey), count (number of individuals from that species were counted in the stomach), prey weight (g).
