Abstract:

This dataset includes original oil volume product download from USGS, post processing file to remove noise and then classified to different oil thickness class file. All the afterward analysis and statistics are based on the classified oil thickness class file. Ascii files of oil slicks' area and length.

Purpose:

This dataset was used to generate oil slick morphology parameters. By knowing the oil slick size and the percentage occupation of oil slick in a simulated remote sensing pixel, we were attempting to figure out the remote sensor spatial resolution that is needed to detect oil distribution and discriminate oil thickness.

Data Parameters and Units:

The original USGS-derived oil volume product download from 'pubs.usgs.gov/of/2010/1167/downloads/figure16c-geotiff.tif' is in the folder: 'aviris_data_and_processing'. Under the same folder,'noise_removal_and_feature_connection.tif' is a file after the noise removal and feature closing operation (described in http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.2015.12.003) on the original volume product. The post processing data were then classified to four different thickness classes ('thickness_class.tif'). In this thickness class file, DN value of 0 means: no oil thicker than sheen; 1: oil thickness less equal 50µm while greater than sheen; 2:50-200µm; 3:200-1000µm; 4: greater than 1000µm. No data pixels are filled with -1000. This was then used to generate Table 3 and Figs.8&9 in the corresponding publication. Each thickness class and all thickness classes were then extracted separately and converted to thickness class shapefile features (..\data\shapefile\thickness_*.shp).These shapefiles were then used to calculate a minimum bounding circle in software ESRI ArcGIS (version 10.3). The following is a list of attributes for each of the thickness class shapefiles: Parts (integer); Length (perimeter, m); Area (sq m); The corresponding minimum bounding circles are in directory (…\data\shapefile\circle_thickness_*.shp) The following is a list of attributes for each of the circle thickness class shapefiles: Parts (integer); Length (perimeter, m); Area (sq m); ORIG_FID (ID); MBG_Diameter (Minimum bounding geometry diameter, m); Additional (no parameter) Shapefiles contained within the shapefile directory: AVIRIS flight lines (aviris_run.shp); Bounding Rectangle Sample bonding_rectangle_sample.shp); Figure Locations 2 and 3 (location_fig2.shp, location_fig3.shp); Spectral points (spectral_point.shp); The attributes of these circle features (..\data\ascii\circle_thickness_*.txt) including the original thickness class oil slick area and the encompassed circle diameter. The diameter is the approximate length of a slick while the slick's width is calculated by original-area/circle-diameter. These length and width data were used to statistically generate Table 2 and Figs.5-7. The following is a list of parameters for each circle thickness text file: polygon_length (m); polygon_area (sq m); oringinal_polygon_ID (ID); bonding_circle_diameter (m); For each plot in Figs.1&3, ascii files are provided under the directory:'..\data\ascii\'. Figs.5-9 ascii files were not provided. Below are the data parameters for the ascii files “cumulative_thickness.txt” and “cumulative_volume.txt” used to generate the plots in Fig.1 Thickness (nm); Count (integer); Frequency (%); Cumulative_frequency (%); “Figure 3c.txt” contains spectra data of AVIRIS pixels of various oil thickness classes and oil-free seawater. The first column contains wavelength values (nm). The remaining columns contain reflectance values (%) for the oil thickness classes used in this dataset (≤ 50, 50–200, 200–1000 and > 1000 μm).
