Abstract:

This dataset includes MODIS and VIIRS imagery used in the paper "Extracting Oil Slick Features From VIIRS Nighttime Imagery Using a Gaussian Filter and Morphological Constraints" (DOI: 10.1109/LGRS.2015.2444871). For accuracy assessment, the ROI file used as oil slick ground truth, feature extraction results, the VIIRS nighttime imagery used in the test and the final accuracy assessment statistics are also included.

Purpose:

The dataset is used to test the effectiveness of the feature extraction method based on Guassian Filter and Morphological constraints.

Data Parameters and Units:

The MODIS and VIIRS images used in the experiments are under: 'satellite_data' folder All the feature extraction experiments are conducted at defined Region of Interest on these satellite images. The following are the parameters in the VIIRS HDF files: 1. senz: Definition: sensor zenith angle Unit: degrees 2. sena: Definition: sensor azimuth angle Unit: degrees 3. monz: Definition: moon zenith angle Unit: degrees 4. mona: Definition: moon azimuth angle Unit: degrees 5. radiance: Definition: VIIRS day/night band (DNB) radiance Unit: mW cm^-2 um^-1 sr^-1 In table.1 folder, the image used as ground truth and the extracted result image are put under './data/' folder 'V2012249080744.night.nwgom.mapped.tif' is the VIIRS data used in the feature extraction process. 'V2012249080744.extracted.tiff' is the extracted result.(The feature is marked as 0 value) 'true.roi' is the manually delineated result of the corresponding oil slicks. It will serve as ground truth in the acccuracy assessment. Due to disk failure, the original delineation results is not available now. Therefore a slightly different manualy delineation result is generated. The corresponding accuracy report is 'ac.txt' The accuracy report from the data used in the published paper is 'accuracy_results.txt'
