Abstract:

Controlled oil exposure study to evaluate the effects of south Louisiana crude oil, via contaminated food, on fish health. Data include tPAH results for water, red drum livers, red drum whole bodies, fish feed, and VOC results.

Methods:

Sub adult red drum were fed one of control, low-concentration Deepwater horizon crude oil contaminated feed, or high-concentration Deepwater Horizon crude oil contaminated feed twice for 14 days at a total of 1% of their body weight. 3 replicates were run for each feeding regime and 3 fish were in each replicate. Control food was mixed with no food; high concentration food was produced by mixing 1000 grams of feed with 91 grams of oil or 92 grams of oil and mixed in a Hobard mixer for 5 minutes; Low concentration food was produced by mixing 100 grams of feed with 54 grams of oil or 53 grams of oil and mixed in a Hobard mixer for 5 minutes. The oil source was the SLC-Marlin Platform. Water and feed were sampled each day for PAH analysis. Fish were sacrificed after 14 days for PAH analysis in livers and in whole body. Whole body defined as homogenized fish minus liver, intestine, feces, spleen, kidney, piece of gill, otoliths, lenses, and heart. For PAHs two values are reported for each sample: . The column "unblanked" reports the concentration calculated from under the peak minus the sample blank concentration. The column "blanked" indicates which analytes are below minimum detection limit (MDL), and considers these values as 0 when calculating total amount at the bottom. Known standards and surrogates were used to determine recovery. Standard: AccuStandard Cat #S-68283, Custom PAH Standard. Surrogate: Restek Cat #31206, SV Internal Standard Mix 2mg/ml. Feed was also sampled for VOC analysis. VOCs were analyzed by Pace Analytical Services, LLC. Results reported conform to the most current, applicable TNI/NELAC standards and the laboratory's Quality Assurance Manual, where applicable, unless otherwise noted.
