Abstract:

This dataset reports measurement of sediment sample wet weight (g) and dry weight (g) for core sub-samples at 2mm sampling intervals for “surficial unit” and 5mm sampling resolution intervals to the base of cores. Bulk density is the dry weight per sampling volume expressed as g/cm3 and is utilized in the calculation of Mass Accumulation Rates (MAR’s). The dataset also reports percent porewater. The sediment cores were collected onboard the R/V Weatherbird II cruise WB-0816 in the northern Gulf of Mexico and during a land-based field expedition in Mexico (MX-0816) from 2016-08-05 to 2016-09-09. The R/V Weatherbird II cruise WB-0816 was led by chief scientist Dr. Steve Murawski. The objective of the cruise was to create Gulf-wide baselines for sediment and fish. The land-based field expedition in Mexico (MX-0816) was led by Dr. Patrick Schwing and Dr. David Hollander with the objective of collecting coastal sediments.

Purpose:

Measure bulk density and porewater data from sediment cores.

Data Parameters and Units:

Latitude and longitude of core site (decimal degrees), water depth of core site (m), core collection date (mm/dd/yy), site identification (ID), core identification (id), top depth of interval (mm), bottom depth of interval (mm), average depth of interval (mm), sediment wet weight (g), sediment dry weight (g), sample volume (cm3), bulk density (g/cm3), porewater (%), laboratory/facility analysis was performed at. Bulk density was calculated using sediment dry weight (g) and sample volume (cm3). Blank cell denotes analysis not performed for the interval, no data generated. The dataset includes cruise documentation. Note: In sheet2 worksheet of file "BD GRIIDC NGoM and SGoM 2016.xlsx", the core collection date for core Ids: WB-0816-MC-SL-26B-500 is 8/19/16 (mm/dd/yyyy) and for WB-0816-MC-SL-29-900 is 8/14/16 (mm/dd/yyyy).
