Abstract:

The purpose of the Survey of Trauma, Resilience, and Opportunity among Neighborhoods in the Gulf (STRONG) II was to follow-up the STRONG I participants who resided in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi to assess the effects of the 2017-2018 hurricane season on their well-being. Respondents were asked about their experiences related to the hurricanes including hurricane exposure, evacuation, casualties and dangers related to the hurricanes, damage and losses, and post-hurricane recovery and relocation; they were also asked about dimensions of well-being including mental health, physical health, traumatic experiences, and alcohol use. Additional questions asked about housing, sources of information, employment, risk perceptions, and demographics. STRONG II administration entailed telephone interviews and mailed surveys that were collected from January to May of 2019. The total sample comprised 751 respondents in counties/parishes across the four states that were within close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

Purpose:

To assess the long term well-being of residents of Gulf coast communities.

Data Parameters and Units:

The datasets consist of responses to a survey administered from January to May of 2019. The associated codebook details each variable and its response options. The file STRONGII_nonTX.csv - This is the primary data collected from respondents residing in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida The file "strongII_nonTX_codebook.txt" - This is the codebook that contains information about the survey questionnaire, variable descriptions, and code values used in the primary data file.

Methods:

This survey was administered via mail and phone to participants living in counties across Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. The mail and phone data were combined to create the final dataset. This dataset is for a follow-up survey of individuals who participated in STRONG I and those data are available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI): R4.x266.199:0001 (DOI: 10.7266/N76971Z0). Thus, the unique respondent ID (respID) can be used to merge multiple waves of data for longitudinal analyses. The "same_respondent" indicator flags those records for which the respondents were the same at both waves, as any eligible member of the household could have completed the surveys.
