Abstract:

The purpose of the Survey of Trauma, Resilience, and Opportunity among Neighborhoods in the Gulf (STRONG) II was to assess the effects of Hurricane Harvey on the well-being of residents of Gulf coast communities, specifically those residing in Texas who participated in STRONG I. Respondents were asked about their experiences related to the hurricane including hurricane exposure, evacuation, casualties and dangers related to the hurricane, damage and losses, and post-hurricane recovery and relocation; they were also asked about dimensions of well-being including mental health, physical health, traumatic experiences, and alcohol use. Additional questions asked about housing, sources of information, employment, risk perceptions, and demographics. STRONG administration entailed telephone interviews and mailed surveys that were collected from March to June of 2018. The total sample comprised 295 respondents in 16 counties across Texas that were within close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

Purpose:

To assess the long term well-being of residents of Gulf coast communities.

Data Parameters and Units:

This dataset was created from responses to a survey of residents in Texas. The codebook associated with this dataset details each variable and its response options. The file STRONGII_TX.csv — This is the primary data collected from respondents residing in Texas. The file "strongII_tx_codebook.txt" - This is the codebook that contains information about the survey questionnaire, variable descriptions, and code values used in the primary data file.

Methods:

Participants were administered the survey either through phone or mail from March-June of 2018. The mail and phone responses were then combined to create the final dataset. This dataset is for a follow-up survey of individuals who participated in STRONG I and those data are available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI): R4.x266.199:0001 (DOI: 10.7266/N76971Z0). Thus, the unique respondent ID (respID) can be used to merge multiple waves of data for longitudinal analyses. The "same_respondent" indicator flags those records for which the respondents were the same at both waves, as any eligible member of the household could have completed the surveys.
