Abstract:

This dataset includes recordings of laboratory experiments on bubble plumes that were released into a homogeneous rotating saltwater environment.

Purpose:

To study the effects of a rotating environment on the dynamics of multiphase plumes.

Data Parameters and Units:

The density of the ambient saltwater in g/cm^3; Source buoyancy flux B in cm^4/s^3; Rotation rate of the tank in rad/s. Please note that the decimal dot "." of a number is represented as "x" in the name of a folder. For example, "AmbientDensity1x03/B70/0x1" contains the side-view recording for an experiment that was conducted in the saltwater environment of 1.03 g/cm^3, with the source buoyancy flux of 70 cm^4/s^3 and at a rotation rate of the tank of 0.1 rad/s. Top-view recordings can be found inside "AmbientDensity1x18/topSurfaceB..." folders. Each folder at a final stage of the folder tree contains the digiflow movie of the experiment in a ".dfm" format and a folder "Images" that contains the same movie decomposed frame by frame as ".png" images. Methods:

The experiments were conducted in a tank that is described in detail in Frank et al. (2017). In the present set of experiments, the tank was filled with saltwater to the height of H=0.6 m. Bubble plumes were produced using electrolysis. Each experiment was captured for 300 seconds at a rate of 10 frames/second for side-view and of 5 frames/second for top-view videos. We varied the density of the ambient saltwater, the source buoyancy flux of the bubble plume and the rotation rate of the tank.
