Abstract:

The data set contains an idealized numerical simulation with MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) of the Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Ocean. The domain is a doubly-periodic box of 256km x 256km x 700m at 500m horizontal resolution. The model includes sea-ice dynamics/thermodynamics variables with ECMWF forcings and is integrated for two years model time.

Purpose:

The goal of this model simulation was to simulate under-sea ice conditions in the Beaufort Sea at resolution sufficient to resolve submesoscale features.

Data Parameters and Units:

Dataset contains velocity fields, salinity and temperature and sea ice variables: ice thickness, ice concentration and ice velocities. Folders in the archive are structured as follows: build - source build files, links to input files and restart files (.meta and .data) code - configuration files for some modules are modified here and override the default files. input - contains forcing files, bathymetry file, boundary conditions and initial conditions. Outputs files are divided as follows: kpp_state - diagnostics variables for kpp (K-profile parameter) phiHyd - the hydrostatic potential (=pressure/rho0) anomaly phiHydLow - is the bottom pressure anomaly sice - contains the sea ice diagnostics state - contains the model diagnostics A detailed description of the content of the output files and grid files can be found in the nc files themselves or in the MITgcm manual. Grid files are in meters as the model is ran on an f-plane.
