Abstract:

This dataset consists of underway navigation, temperature, salinity and fluorescence data collected during the Submesoscale Processes and Lagrangian Analysis on the Shelf (SPLASH) experiment in the Louisiana Bight from 2017-04-16 to 2017-05-02. Surface data was collected continuously aboard the UCLA Zodiac research vessel using a Sea-Bird Scientific MicroTSG Thermosalinograph (SBE45) and WETStar fluorometer.

Purpose:

This data set provides tracer and density information at the surface at very high resolution. It is used to infer the physical properties of the freshwater plume and associated fronts in the Louisiana Bight.

Data Parameters and Units:

Each CSV files contain 12 columns with date string (YYYYMMDDhhmmss.sssss, UTC), date (DDMMYY), time (hhmmss.ss), longitude (decimal degrees), latitude (decimal degrees), true heading (degrees from North), course over the ground (COG, degrees from North), speed over the ground (SOG, m/s), surface water temperature (degrees C), surface salinity (psu), surface conductivity (S/m), relative fluorescence (Volts).

Methods:

Continuous surface sampling on board the UCLA Zodiac.

Instruments:

Temperature and Salinity data using Seabird SBE45 Thermosalinograph, Fluorescence using Wetstar Fluorometer.
