Abstract:

This data set contains subsurface data that was collected using a towed array of sensors that measure time, temperature, salinity, and/or pressure. This data can be combined with boat track data which is included, to construct high-resolution vertical sections of temperature and salinity fields.

Purpose:

This data was collected to investigate the dynamics of a small scale fresh waterfront on the shelf in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

JFE files(.csv): time, temp[deg C], salinity[psu], conductivity[mS/cm], electronic conductivity[uS/cm], Battery[Volts]. KDS files: time[sec], latitude[degrees], longitude[degrees], ship heading[degrees], Course over ground [degrees], speed over ground[knots], temperature [deg C], salinity[psu], conductivity[S/m]. RBR files(.mat): time[sec],depth[m], air pressure[dBar], temperature[deg C]. Please note that KDS files have time data in UTC, JFE and RBR in Central time (UTC-5).

Methods:

A line of up to 20m length was towed behind a small boat with a negative lift weight at the end. Distributed along the line are T,S,P sensors, sampling at 1 Hz.
