Abstract:

Bamboo plates (30 cm diameter) were released in the Louisiana Bight. A drone was used to collect images at 10-second temporal resolution for up to 20-minute intervals. This dataset includes the images and the drone's position and attitude data.

Purpose:

The purpose of the experiment was to observe ocean currents, very near-surface, on the shelf in order to understand better how oil spills can be transported across the Louisiana bight. This data set focuses on oceanic small scales (1m--100m, 10s--10000s) processes.

Data Parameters and Units:

The images are referenced in time, latitude and longitude. The dataset contains a total of 7 flights, each flight has a folder with images and a *.csv file with all the flight parameters of the drone such as the orientation of the camera (gimbal pitch, roll and yaw), altitude, position, and time of image acquisition. Units are specified in the column header/first line of each *.csv file. The first two columns of the *.csv file contain the information necessary to match the images with time and position. The first column has the time in UTC and the second column states whether an image was taken (yes or blank cell). The exif date stamp was used to match the images. Note that the exif time is not UTC and to match to the excel file add 5 hours. For example: image DJI_0034.jpg in Flight 1 has an exif of April 27, 2017 at 2:02:49 pm, which converts to 7:02:49 pm UTC. The corresponding csv data is in row 4045, which has a date of 7:02:50 pm. The offset of 1 sec is due to differential rounding and a fractional second offset between the two datasets. Not all photos taken were included in the data submission, but only those that were taken at the target altitude and only those without excessive sunglint.

This raw data has not been quality controlled or filtered. Errors analysis not performed.
