Abstract:

The dataset contains an idealized numerical simulation of a convective mixed layer forced by buoyancy with daily cycle and light winds. This simulation was used to study upper ocean dispersion and diffusivity in lagrangian particles and passive tracers. The submitted dataset is split into two archives: m_25_1b.tar.gz and m_25_2b.tar.gz. The two archives contains two simulations at 25m horizontal resolution forced with (1b) buoyancy forcing and (2b) wind and buoyancy forcing. Each archive contains 3 folders: m_25_?b, m_25_?b_tracer and m_25_?b_particles. The first folder contains all the files (configuration, mesh and outputs) for the spinup. The second folder contains all files of the run with the passive tracer and the third folder contains all files of the longer run used to advect particles. Notice that this last folder might contain partial data due to a corruption of the storage filesystem. It does contain nevertheless all the configuration files necessary to re-run the simulation.

Purpose:

Upper ocean dispersion at scales below the submesoscales (>100m) has potentially large impact of transport of nutrients and pollutants in the mixed layer. This work aims at extending our knowledge of processes driving dispersion at these scales.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset contains configuration files and data. Data includes variables from a buoyancy only and wind and buoyancy driven numerical simulation. Each simulation contains velocities, temperature and tracer of spin-up and full run. The dataset also contains Lagrangian particle trajectories.

Methods:

The model is called ICOM-fluidity (or simply Fluidity, http://fluidityproject.github.io) and is a finite element code developed and maintained by the Imperial College of London. The code is released under LGPG-2.1 license. The version used in the experiments is the 4.1.10. Output files can be read using the vtk libraries available at www.vtk.org or using the visualization software Paraview (www.paraview.org).
