Abstract:

Insects were collected using sweep nets and insect vacuums in a method comparison study in oiled and non-oiled marshes along multiple transects on the Louisiana coast in September 2011. Air temperature and wind speed were also measured.

Purpose:

We compared collections made using the vacuum and sweep methods of insect collection in oiled and non-oiled marshes along multiple transects on the Louisiana coast.

Bay Identity- The name of the bay where sampling occurred Latitude (decimal degrees)- latitude of sampling sites Longitude (decimal degrees)- longitude of sampling sites Collection Date- Date sample collection occurred (DD-MMM-YY) Site Number- number attached to specific sampling sites Collection Technique- technique used to sample at each site (sweep or vacuum) Oil Presences- indicates whether oil was found on the sample site Air Temperature (C)- temperature of the air during sampling Wind Speed (km/h)- wind speed of air during sampling Insect Richness- the number of different insect species represented in sample Log of Insect Richness- Log (insect richness) Insect Abundance- total number of insects in sample Acari Abundance- total number of arachnids in sample Total Abundance-total of both insects and arachnids in sample Log of Total Abundance- Log (Total abundance) Columns O - BN- counts of individuals in 52 insect categories (identified to various taxonomic resolutions of Family, Subfamily, Genus, Species)

Methods:

The vacuum produced a 31 km (19 miles) per hour air intake. Collections for both techniques were made by sweeping the net or nozzle in a back-and-forth arching motion through the Spartina along each transect

Instruments:

Sweep- Sweep net collections were conducted using a 38.1 cm (15 in) diameter collapsible insect collection net (1140.1 cm2, Bioquip Products Inc, Rancho Dominguez, CA) Vacuum- Vacuum collections were made using a gasoline powered Agricultural Backpack 2-Cycle Aspirator Model 1612 with a 22.9 cm (9 in) collection nozzle (411.9 cm2, John W. Hock Company, Gainesville, FL).
