Abstract:

Existing datasets were analyzed to study wind spatial variability in estuarine water. Wind velocity and direction are presented for 9 sites in the Mississippi Delta region during the period 2000-2015. Additional parameters like water temperature, water height, turbidity are available for some sites. Output data is also presented from running the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF).

Purpose:

To study the wind spatial variability in estuarine water, specifically how wind varies near the land-water interface.

File: R4.x264.000-0081_NARR Windows folder containing 18 CSV files that provide wind velocity data for two locations: NARR = North American Regional Reanalysis, NARR-shelf (ID 26403: 29.07375, -90.03406) and NARR-bay (ID 26752: 29.34171, -89.96301) for 2005-2013. Format and data variables are the same for all files: Column 1=NARR defined Station ID; Column 2=Wind Velocity component toward East (m/s); Wind Velocity component toward North (m/s). File: R4.x264.000-0081_WRF Windows folder containing 5 CSV files that provide wind velocity data for five locations: WRF = Weather Research and Forecasting model, WRF-bay (29.422500, -89.950556), WRF-land (29.250676, -90.671633), WRF-north barrier island (29.265037, -89.957750), WRF-offshore (28.815301, -90.485905), and WRF-south barrier island (29.257464, -89.948101) for the year 2009. Format and data variables are the same for all files: Column 1=Wind Velocity component toward East (m/s); Column 2=Wind Velocity component toward North (m/s). File: R4.x264.000-0081_WeatherStationData Windows folder containing 3 xlsx files that provide weather station data for two locations: Cocodrie (29.25502, - 90.666357) and Terrebonne Bay (29.1867, -90.608) for 2000-2015. Format and data variables for Cocodrie_2000-2013.xlsx (2000-2013) and Terrebonne_Bay_2000-2013.xlsx (2000-2004, 2008-2013, no data for 2005-2007) are the same: stationid: Identifier for the station from which the data were collected; yeardata: Year that the data were collected; jday: Julian day of the year that the data were collected; timedata: Hour of the day that the data were collected in 24 hour time, eg. 100 indicates 1:00 AM; windspeed: Speed of the wind in miles per hour; WindDir: Direction of the wind in degrees; WaterTemp: Temperature of the water in degrees Celsius; WaterHeight: Height of the water in meters; turbidity: Turbidity of the water in NTU. For both files, a blank cell or a value of 999 indicates missing data. Format and data variables for Terrebone_Bay_8-19-13_7-15-15.xlsx are: Date: The date and time (12 hour) that data were collected at this station (MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM); wind_from_direction (degrees): Direction of the wind in degrees; wind_speed (mph): Wind speed in miles per hour; Water_Depth (ft): Water depth in feet; Water Depth (m): Water depth in meters. A value of 99.99 (positive or negative) indicates missing data.

Methods:

The NARR data comes from the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR), a long-term, dynamically consistent, high-resolution, high-frequency, atmospheric and land surface hydrology dataset for North America. The WRF data is output from the Weather Research and Forecasting model.
