Abstract:

Samples for grain size were collected in Spring, Summer and Fall 2015 and 2016 from the marsh and subtidal areas in the vicinities of Terrebonne Bay, Grand Isle, and Port Sulphur, Louisiana. Percent clay, silt, and sand are reported for each sample.

Purpose:

Collected as part of the Coastal Waters Consortium project, to determine the effects of the Macondo oil spill on coastal Louisiana marshes.

Data Parameters and Units:

Date of Collection: Date samples were collected (MM/DD/YY), Sampling Site: User-assigned identifier sampling location, LAT (decimal degrees): Latitude of sampling location in decimal degrees, LONG (decimal degrees): Longitude of sampling location in decimal degrees, % Clay, % Silt, and % Sand.

Methods:

Marsh sediments for grain size were collected using a 7.62 cm diameter core tube to a depth of 10 cm. Subtidal sediments were collected by attaching a 7.62 cm diameter core tube to a homemade PVC coring device designed to collect cores underwater. Cores were extruded placed in Ziploc bags and stored in the freezer until processing. Frozen samples were sent to a contract laboratory at Louisiana State University for analysis. Grain size analysis was conducted using a Beckmann–Coulter laser diffraction particle size analyzer Model LS 13 320 (measures particle size ranges of 0.02 to 2000 μm) utilizing the method of Xu et al. (2014).
