Abstract:

Samples for total organic carbon (TOC) and water content were collected in Spring, Summer and Fall 2015 and 2016 from the marsh and subtidal areas in the vicinities of Terrebonne Bay, Grand Isle, and Port Sulphur, Louisiana. Raw values are reported for each sample, as well as percent water and TOC content.

Purpose:

Collected as part of the Coastal Waters Consortium project, to determine the effects of the Macondo oil spill on coastal Louisiana marshes.

Data Parameters and Units:

Date of Collection: Date samples were collected in the field (MM/DD/YY), Sampling Site: User-defined identifier assigned to each sampling location, Site Type: Indicates whether sediments samples were collected in marsh or subtidal areas, LAT (decimal degrees): Latitude of sampling location in decimal degrees, LONG (decimal degrees): Longitude of sampling location in decimal degrees, Replicate #: User-defined identifier for replicate samples, Wet weight (g): sediment weight with water content, Dry weight (g): sediment weight without water content, Combusted weight (g): sediment weight without water and TOC content, Water weight (g): water weight without sediment and TOC content, TOC weight (g): TOC weight without water and sediment content, Sediment weight (g): sediment weight without water and TOC content, Water content (%): percentage of water in the sediment, TOC content (%): percentage of organic matter in the sediment, Sediment (%): percentage of sediment remaining after removal of water and organic carbon.

Methods:

Marsh sediments for water content and TOC were collected using a 7.62 cm diameter core tube to a depth of 10 cm. Subtidal sediments were collected by attaching a 7.62 cm diameter core tube to a homemade PVC coring device designed to collect cores underwater. Cores were extruded placed in Ziploc bags and stored in the freezer until processing. TOC was determined in the laboratory by loss on ignition method.
