Abstract:

The dataset contains the Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) absorbance specta of the three different phytoplankton: Emiliania huxleyi, Skeletonema costatum, and Naviula sp. and sample mesocosm study conducted using natural water obtained from the Texas shelf. Both the experiments had two different conditions; control and the one where the phytoplankton were grown in chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction of oil (CEWAF). Macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins produce characteristics absorbance in FTIR spectra. Therefore information relating to change in macromolecular composition in response to control and CEWAF can be obtained using this spectra.

Purpose:

To build a model that can identify if a sample has been exposed to chemically enhanced (COREXIT) water accommodated fraction of oil.

Data Parameters and Units:

Parameters: Absorbance spectra from 3650 to 600 cm-1 were collected at a spectral resolution of 8 cm-1 with 50 scans co-added. ATR correction with a special crystal angle of incidence 38.7 and crystal and sample refractive index 2.4 and 1.5 was applied to the spectra Units: Relative units GRIIDC FTIR Dataset for Mesocosm.csv: Controls- Control (1-5); CEWAF treated- CEWAF (1-6) GRIIDC FTIR Dataset for 3 species.csv: Controls- Emiliania huxleyi C[A-C (1-3)], Skeletonema costatum C[A-C (1-3)], and Navicula sp. Methods:

The data were collected in two different experiments. The first being a screening experiment with three different species: Emiliania huxleyi, Skeletonema costatum, and Navicula sp. and the second being a mesocosm experiment performed using coastal water from Texas Shelf. At the end of the experiment (Day 14), 50 mL of the cultures were harvested and washed twice in MilliQ water by centrifuging the suspension at 2000 × g for 10 mins to remove the CEWAF and other media components that might essentially interfere with infrared radiation absorbance. The samples were then immediately stored in -4○C in dark.
