Abstract:

To characterize plots as marsh only, mangrove only, or mixed, we employed a simple, effective assessment of percent cover. In each 3m*3m plot, we quantified plant species percent cover in three haphazardly selected 0.25m2 quadrats. Purpose:

Assessments of percent vegetation cover offer simple and accurate characterizations of relative species composition. This method was used to ensure that vegetation composition at selected treatment plots was commensurate with levels as outlined in the proposal.

Data Parameters and Units:

Latitude: decimal degree, Longitude: decimal degree, Date: Date that samples were collected (mm/dd/yyyy), Site: Name assigned to each site at the beginning of the sampling period (all ACER groups using same site names), Habitat: Habitat type where the samples were collected at each site (mangrove, marsh, or mixed), Oiling?: Denotes whether the site was oiled (Oiled) or non-oiled (Non) according to SCAT (Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique) shoreline data from NOAA, Mangrove: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Mangrove (A germinans) vegetation, Spartina: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Spartina (S. alterniflora) vegetation, Batis: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Batis sp. vegetation, Borrichia: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Borrichia sp. vegetation, Salicornia: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Salicornia sp vegetation, Iva: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing Iva sp. vegetation, Bare: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot that is not vegetated, Rack: Percentage of plot 3x3m plot containing tidal rack, Total: Sum of Mangrove, Spartina, Batis, Borrichia, Salicornia, Iva, Bare, and Rack.
