Abstract:

Five bottom-moored Environmental Acoustic Recording System (EARS) buoys were deployed between June 24-26 and recovered between October 27-28, 2015. The buoys consist of two hydrophones that record onto two paired, single-channel EARS recording systems sampling at 192 kHz each stored in 16-bit proprietary binary format. There were 4 buoys recovered in October, with up to 4 disks each, containing raw acoustic data. This dataset contains an inventory of the raw acoustic files. To request the raw acoustic files, please contact Dr. Natalia Sidorovskaia at nas@louisiana.edu with specific file information from the data inventory.

Purpose:

Acoustic data was collected to determine presence/absence and distribution of marine mammal species after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, specifically sperm whales, beaked whales, and other odontocetes.

Data Parameters and Units:

Raw acoustic files are recorded in a proprietary format. After extraction of the header info and conversion to wav format, parameters include: timestamp (MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS), voltage (V), and sample number. Filenames contain the following information: 5dddFFFF.BBD 5 = year 2015 for LADC-GEMM year 1 data collection event ddd = three-digit yearday FFFF = hexadecimal index number BB = buoy number, 01 to 10 D = disk number, 0 to 3 To request raw acoustic files please contact Dr. Natalia Sidorovskaia at nas@louisiana.edu with the exact Buoy/Disk/file information that corresponds to the inventory. File transfer methods will depend on the overall size of the requested data.
