Abstract:

This dataset represents the grain size analysis performed for five surficial sediment samples collected within the Mississippi Bight in the northern Gulf of Mexico using a four-core multi-corer on board the R/V Point Sur on April 04, 2016. Samples were analyzed at the University of Southern Mississippi Sediment Laboratory using a Malvern 3000 Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer. The triplicate grain size analyses, as well as the average for each sample, are included. Size classifications include Dx(10), Dx(50), Dx(90), and mode grain sizes, all reported in microns.

Purpose:

This dataset is being used in conjunction with Reson 7125 multibeam echosounder backscatter data in order to provide sediment distribution inputs to CONCORDE modeling efforts. Physical surficial sediment samples can be used to constrain backscatter estimates of seafloor grain size.

Data Parameters and Units:

sample name, record number, instrument serial number, collection date (mm/dd/yyyy), latitude (decimal degrees), longitude (decimal degrees), analysis date time, Dx (10) in microns, Dx (50) in microns, Dx (90) in microns, mode in microns, mode count, weighted residual (%), concentration (% in volume). Dx(XX) are volume distributions at the (XX) percentile. Kurtosis and skewness numerically describe the shape of the grain size distribution of each sample.
