Abstract:

A Reson Seabat 7125 multibeam sonar collected bathymetry and backscatter data along three corridors in the Mississippi Bight. The data files are stored in the GSF format. Data were collected between 07/23/2016 and 07/31/2016

Purpose:

A Reson Seabat 7125 SV2 (200/400 kHz) multibeam sonar was used to collect high resolution bathymetry and backscatter data along three sampling corridors within the Mississippi Bight. These datasets were used to provide other CONCORDE scientists an accurate depiction of the seafloor and depth within the sampling domain. The seafloor backscatter data was coupled with surficial seabed sediment samples in order to provide sediment distribution maps to aid in numerical modeling within the Mississippi Bight.

Data Parameters and Units:

Subfolders are named: ProjectName_Cruise_AreaName Eg. CONCORDE_SU2016_EchoSeabed. Three areas were surveyed: Corridors East (Echo), Middle (Mike), and West (Whiskey). The ISIIS tows were conducted twice a day, so their files names include a number after the Area Name to designate multiple passes and a date: Eg. CONCORDE_SP2016_ISIIS1_07APR, CONCORDE_SP2016_ISIIS2_07APR. The subfolders contain Generic Sensor Format files (*.GSF). These were created using *.DB and *.QPD files, which are QPS proprietary formats. The paired *.DB and *.QPD files were merged into *.GSF file format using QPS FMGeocoder Toolbox (FMGT). The names of the files within each subfolder are a combination of the logging name in QINSy and a preset naming n FMGT after merging into a *.GSF format. Therefore, the names are arbitrary; association with a specific area should be considered based on the subfolder each file is located within. The *.GSF files can be opened in any QPS software (Fledermaus, Qimera, FMGT, etc.) as well as CARIS HIPS and SIPS.
