Abstract:

These data were collected with the In Situ Ichtyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS) to describe the distribution of organisms and particles along a meridional transect starting at the 20 m isobath near the mouth of Mobile Bay and extending offshore to the 40 m isobath. We performed this transect on 3 days (October 29-November 1, 2015) and used image histogram statistics to describe the concentration of marine snow particles within the images. A subset of these images (3 tow-yo profiles with the ISIIS) were segmented and classified to nearest taxonomic category. The nearest environmental data is displayed with each particle identification.

Purpose:

Characterize the distribution of particles in relation to physical oceanographic properties.

Data Parameters and Units:

Mean pixel value in images, standard deviation of pixel values, image segments from October 30, 2015, and environmental data associated with each image and histogram calculation (temperature, depth, fluorescence, oxygen voltage, PAR, salinity, latitude, and longitude). Nearjul = nearest percentage of a day from the physical data frame (used to merge biological data with physical dataset) Julian2 = percentage of a day (calculated from the image timestamp) Slice = sequential image number in a “stack” of 1020 images – 1st image is 1 and last is 1020 Xloc = the x location of the top left corner of the bounding box within the raw ISIIS image (pixels) Yloc = the y location of the top left corner of the bounding box within the raw ISIIS image (pixels) Width = width of the bounding box (pixels) Height = height of the bounding box (pixels) Timestamp = unix timestamp for each data point for the rest of the data (all columns to the right) Temp = CTD temperature (degrees Celsius) Depth = depth (in meters) Fluor = chlorophyll a fluorescence measured in voltage on the sensor (relative measure) Fvel = forward velocity (meters per second) Heading = degree of heading of the ship (0 is north, 180 is south) O2 = erroneous calculation of oxygen (please do not use, and units are meaningless) O2volts = voltage value fromt the O2 sensor (these values are correct) Par = Photosynthetically Active Radiation (micro Einsteins per cm2) Parvolts = voltage as measured by the ISIIS PAR sensor Pitch = degree of pitch on the ISIIS vehicle (0 degrees is flat and negative means pointing towards the bottom) Roll = degree of roll of the ISIIS vehicle Salinity = water salinity as measured by the CTD (unitless or psu) Vertvel = computed vertical velocity (meters per second) of the ISIIS vehicle *pixels can be converted to mm using the known field of view of the ISIIS images for the small camera, which is 43 mm, and each raw image is 1024 by 1024 pixels. So 1 mm is equivalent to ~24 pixels.
