Abstract:

Data were collected between October 29 and November 2, 2015 onboard the RV Point Sur as part of the CONCORDE field sampling campaign. The data includes image segments (regions of interest) of phyllosoma larvae with their classifications as attached or unattached to gelatinous zooplankton (4 days of data) as well as all zooplankton above a 2000 pixel size threshold imaged on October 30, 2015. Each individual phyllosoma was merged to the nearest environmental data collected by the In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System, which includes traditional oceanographic data (temp, salinity, etc.). Measurements of the phyllosoma and attached gelatinous zooplankton are also included. The purpose of the data collection was to describe the oceanographic relationships to phyllosoma and zooplankton distributions and behaviors in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Purpose:

The purpose of the data collection was to describe the oceanographic relationships to phyllosoma and zooplankton distributions and behaviors in the northern Guf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

Images with time stamps and location of plankton within the image frame, sizes of phyllosoma, fine-scale depth (m), salinity (ppt), temperature (deg C), forward velocity of the ISIIS (meters/sec), heading (degrees), oxygen (voltage), pitch/roll of ISIIS vehicle (degree), Latitude (decimal degrees), Longitude, vertical velocity of ISIIS (meters/sec), Label, Angle, Identification, Length (mm)

Methods:

Raw images were segmented into regions of interest that were larger than 2000 pixels in size (~3.3 mm equivalent spherical diameter). Images were then manually classified using an ImageJ annotation software. Titles of the image segments correspond to their identification.

Instruments:

The In situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS) is a shadowgraph imager that detects plankton and particles with a ~60 micron pixel resolution. Raw images capture a water parcel that is 13 cm by 13 cm (field of view), with a 50 cm depth of field. The system deployed here has two cameras, but only the large camera (13 cm by 13 cm field of view) was used in this study.
