Abstract:

Data was collected on board the R/V Pelican during Leg 2 of the 2016 spring campaign (April 4-10, 2016) in the vicinity of the Mobile Bay river plume in the northern Gulf of Mexico. River plume fronts were observed on multiple occasions. There was also a wind event which drastically changed stratification. Data in this collection: X-Band Radar tuned to detect fronts; data collected simultaneously in other collections: shipboard flow-through, shipboard navigation, and shipboard meteorological (GRIIDC dataset R4.x260.000:0020); ADCP (GRIIDC dataset R4.x260.000:0010); CTD (74 casts) (GRIIDC dataset R4.x260.000:0018); Chameleon microstructure (~4000 casts) (GRIIDC dataset R4.x260.000:0019); Biosonics acoustics (GRIIDC dataset R4.x260.000:0022); SST; and a bow temperature/salinity chain.

Purpose:

When tuned correctly, X-band radar allows the visualization of convergent surface features such as river plume fronts.

Data Parameters and Units:

Dataset contains X-BAND RADAR movie files (.mp4) and two examples of the retrieved oceanic fronts. Each front example folder (April 9, 2016 and April 10, 2016), contains the individual snapshots (*.jpg) with frames of the radar image and a MATLAB file. The MATLAB file contains a structure with 8 fields: image name, band (“X”), time (MATLAB time), ship coordinates (latitude and longitude, decimal degrees), front coordinates (latitude and longitude, decimal degrees), GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude, decimal degrees), Quality (“3”)

Methods:

These movies directly record the ship's x-band radar. The title of each movie contains the date and time that the movie started recording. There is no time lapse for the movie. If 30 minutes have elapsed in the movie, that means that 30 minutes have passed in real time.
