Abstract:

A two-phase Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model GPUSPH was used to investigate oil dispersion under breaking waves. This model simulates a single oil drop rising through still water and predicts realistic shape change of the oil drop during the rising process caused by buoyancy force. This dataset contains the source code of GPUSPH and the numerical setup files for oil-cube and oil-sphere tests. These tests consider a oil drop rising through a still water tank with side length equal to l = 0.2 m and water depth of h = 0.2 m. In the oil-cube test the oil drop is cube with side length of L= 0.04 m. In the oil-sphere test the oil drop is sphere with a diameter of 0.04 m. In both tests the oil drops are placed near the bottom of the tank with the vertical centers at z = -0.16 m. The dataset also includes setup files for a numerical simulation of a previously conducted laboratory experiment on oil dispersion under breaking waves. In the laboratory experiment a 6 m long, 0.3 m wide, and 0.6 m high wave flume was set up with a piston-type wave maker around 0.55 m from the beginning of the tank. The wave maker had a total displacement of approximately 45.72 cm. A 25.4 x 2.54 cm oil slick was placed in the water surface with a thickness of 0.5 mm. The GPUSPH was used to predict oil dispersion and compare the results to this laboratory experiment. In GPUSPH a 6 m tank was reproduced but the tank width was narrowed. Particle sizes of 1 mm and 5 mm were used to discretize the wave tank. Two seconds physical time was considered and the total number of particles ranged from 0.5 million to 20 million.
