Abstract:

This laboratory experiment measured the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa sp. abundance after exposure to various treatments (dispersant, dispersed crude oil, and not dispersed crude oil). This dataset also reports 16s rRNA gene sequencing results and assigned taxonomy for the attached and free-living bacteria associated with Heterocapsa sp. for each treatment.

Purpose:

Study of the contribution of the associated attached and free-living bacteria to the oil-resistance of Heterocapsa sp., an armored dinoflagellate isolated in the Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

The file Heterocapsa_abundance contains the the number of Heterocapsa cells (cells/mL) over the time in each replicate (3 replicates) of 7 treatments: Control (without oil amendment), Olow (oil at 5ppm), Dlow (dispersant at 0.25ppm), ODlow (oil at 5ppm + dispersant at 0.25ppm), Olow (oil at 25ppm), Dlow (dispersant at 1.25ppm), and ODlow (oil at 25ppm + dispersant at 1.25ppm). The file OTU_table_bacteria contains the taxonomy assigned to the 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained for the phytoplankton-attached bacteria (PA) and free-living bacteria (FL) in each sequenced treatment: C0 (control at time 0h), Cf (control at time final 144h), Olow (oil at 5ppm), Ohigh (oil at 25ppm), Dhigh (dispersant at 1.25ppm), ODhigh (oil at 25ppm + dispersant at 1,25ppm). The folder fastq_files contains the fastq files of the 16S rRNA gene sequences for each treatment. There are 2 files for each treatment labeled as in OTU_table_bacteria: R1 contains the forward sequences and R2 the reverse sequences.
