Abstract:

Tarballs were collected from Mustang and Galveston Island following the 2014 Texas City "Y" spill. This dataset reports bacterial abundance for tarballs and corresponding sand samples.

Methods:

Total DNA was extracted from tar balls using MoBio PowerMag Soil Extraction Kit (MO BIO laboratories, Inc., Carlsbad, California) according to manufacturer’s instruction. Sequencing was performed by Research and Testing Laboratory (RTL, Lubbock, Texas) using primers 28F and 388R in Illumina MiSeq platform. Samples were amplified for sequencing in a two–step process. First amplifications were performed in 25 µl reactions with QiagenHotStarTaq master mix (QiagenInc, Valencia, California) and performed on ABI Veritithermocyclers (Applied Biosytems, Carlsbad, California). Products from the first stage amplification were added to a second PCR based on qualitatively determine concentrations
