Abstract:

The dataset was obtained from xenic (with bacteria) and axenic (without bacteria) cultures of 3 different phytoplankton species: Skeletonema sp. (diatom), Peridinium sociale (armored dinoflagellate), Amphidinium carterae (non-armored dinoflagellate). Each culture was exposed to dispersant Corexit 95000 (0.5ppm), light Louisiana sweet crude oil (10ppm), and dispersed crude oil, in addition to a control (no enrichment), each treatment was done in triplicate. Both phytoplankton and bacteria (phytoplankton-attached and free-living) physiology (abundance, photosynthesis, bacterial ectoenzyme activity for aminopeptidase, glucosidase and lipase) were measured until the end of the phytoplankton exponential phase (~7days). Bacteria community structures (attached and free-living) was sampled at the begin of the experiment for the controls (T0) and at the end of the exponential phase for each treatment.

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to understand the role of the phytoplankton species-specific associated bacteria in the phytoplankton taxon-dependent oil and/or dispersant response, and if they can help phytoplankton to survive to oil spill.

Data Parameters and Units:

Phytoplankton abundances of the xenic (noted X) and axenic (noted AX) cultures (cells/mL), photosynthesis efficiency Fv/Fm (dimensionless) for X and AX cultures, photosynthesis parameters derived from rapid light curve acquisitions (alpha, and potential rETRmax) for X and AX cultures, abundances of the phytoplankton-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacteria (cells/mL), ectoenzyme activities for aminopeptidase, glucosidase and lipase of the attached fraction (PA bacteria + phytoplankton) and the free-living fraction only (only FL bacteria)) for the xenic and axenic cultures (mol/L/h), 16S rRNA gene sequences of the attached and free-living bacteria: the final normalized OTU table is submitted here, raw sequences can be found in NCBI - RSA (SRA study: SRP121023). In the dataset, replicates are identified R1 for replicate #1, R2 for replicate #2 and R3 for replicate #3. Parameters of the phytoplankton-attached bacteria are noted PA, and parameters of the free-living bacteria are noted FL.
