Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore the use of ultrasound based flow measurements, namely echo PIV-PTV for potential use in measuring oil-spill related flows that cannot be optically accessed. Processing tools were developed to analyze contrast echo images to extract velocity information. This dataset contains contrast echocardiograms (TIF images) of four patients used to calculate the time resolved 2D velocity field of blood flow inside the Left Ventricle of the heart. The final cardiac cycle averaged velocity data obtained after applying optimized processing techniques is provided in matlab data files ('.mat') for each patient.

Purpose:

The purpose was to develop processing tools that analyze contrast echo images to extract velocity information using the motion of contrast bubbles between images. Thereby, such ultrasound based flow measurements can later be applied to study oil spill flows, where there is no optical access.

Data Parameters and Units:

There are 4 folders, one for each patient. Each folder consists of - contrast echo images ('.TIF') inside the left ventricle of patient - MATLAB data file '.mat' that contains the final grid results. - The number of horizontal grid points is : Nx - The number of vertical grid points is : Ny - The number of cardiac cycle phases is : Np - The contents of each MATLAB data file are: - x : Ny by Nx matrix with horizontal coordinates in [cm] - y : Ny by Nx matrix with vertical coordinates in [cm] - u : Np by Ny by Nx matrix with horizontal velocity in [cm/s] - v : Np by Ny by Nx matrix with vertical velocity in [cm/s] - ekg_average : Np by 1 vector containing the electrocardiogram signal

Methods:

Tools for enhancement and velocity calculation using Particle Image Velocimetry and Particle Tracking Velocimetry were applied on the obtained contrast echo images from each patient.

Instruments:

To acquire the contrast echo images, - GE Vivid 9E Ultrasound System was used.
