Abstract:

These data describe the growth dynamics of bacteria in the microbial nanocultures, as well as selectivity to a broad range of molecules.

Purpose:

To characterize the microbial nanoculture. The data describe how the calculations for the growth curves of bacteria grown within the flask vs. the nanocultures was achieved. It also shows the size of the nanocultures generated using a microfluidic device.

Methods:

Colony density of Streptococcus mutans UA159 serotype c used to generate biofilms. S. mutans cells were grown to mid-exponential phase at an optical density at 600nm in ultrafiltered tryptone-yeast extract broth with 1% wt/vol glucose at 37 degrees C and 5% CO2. Biofilms were analyzed using confocal microscopy and computational analysis using COMSTAT version 1, MATLAB software. Particle size distribution: Capsule generated with a flow rate of the inner phase 730ul/h, flow rate of the middle phase (PDMS) 150ul/h, and flow rate of the outer phase 10000ul/h. Images were used to determine area from which the diameter was calculated. Antibiotic susceptibility: E. coli RP437 cells were grown in 200uL LB with or without Ampicillin, Ciprofloxacin, Tobramycin, and Tetracycline. Optical density was at 600nm.
