Abstract:

Data collected from the field after the Texas City Y spill (March 28-29, 2014) in Galveston Bay, TX. Data collected include surface water samples of microplankton. Plankton were enumerated and identified.

Purpose:

To determine how oil spills affect the natural marine microbiota immediately following an oil spill.

Methods:

Samples were collected 15 cm below the surface by placing a long-gloved hand in the water and removing the cap, filling the bottle, and then recapping before bringing the sample to the surface. Samples were lugol-fixed and enumerated with Sedgewick rafter on an inverted light microscope at 40X magnification.
