Abstract:

Cardiac indices including stroke volume, heart rate, cardiac output and afterload pressures were collected for mahi-mahi after exposure to 0% and 10% high energy water accommodated fraction (HEWAF) crude oil. The cardiovascular performance was varied using the β-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol and by controlling afterload pressures. Indices were collected using transonic flow probes and pressure transducers connected to Powerlab data acquisition hardware. This was connected to an IBM computer running LabChart v7 data acquisition software. All LabChart files were converted to .txt files.

Purpose:

Testing if whole animal oil exposure impairs in-situ cardiovascular function in mahi-mahi.

The dataset contains 12 text files. The headers in all files are as follows: Channel 1: Time (seconds in labchart text). Methods:

The oil used to prepare all HEWAFs was collected during the DWH spill. Each HEWAF was prepared within 24 hrs use at a loading rate of 2 g of oil per liter of 1 µm filtered, UV- sterilized seawater and mixed in a Waring CB15 blender (Torrington, CT) at low speed for 30 s. The mixture was immediately transferred to a glass separatory funnel, allowed to settle for 1 h, and the lower ∼90% carefully drained and retained for subsequent use as 100% WAF (unfiltered) that was diluted for test exposures. Cardiac indices including stroke volume, heart rate, cardiac output and afterload pressures were collected for mahi-mahi after exposure to 0% and 10% HEWAF (high energy water accommodated fraction) crude oil. The cardiovascular performance was varied using the β-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol (concentration 10.5 and 10.6 M) and by controlling afterload pressures. Indices were collected using transonic flow probes and pressure transducers connected to Powerlab data acquisition hardware. This was connected to an IBM computer running LabChart v7 data acquisition software. All LabChart files were converted to .txt files.
