Abstract:

Swimming respirometry and static respirometry trials were conducted on yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and European perch (Perca fluviatilis) originating from fresh and brackish water. The dataset contains metadata (fish ID, body mass, total length, salinity, day, sequence) as well as response parameters (critical swimming speed, optimal swimming speed, aerobic scope, swimming aerobic scope, maximum metabolic rate, active metabolic rate, standard metabolic rate, extrapolated standard metabolic rate, oxygen consumption rate at various swimming speeds).

Purpose:

To measure the effect of salinity on swimming performance and metabolism in Perca fish species in relation to origin habitat salinity.

Fish NO/ID = Fish ID; BM = body mass (g); TL = Total length (cm); SAL = salinity; day = day of experimentation; sequence = sequence of experimentation, A = from salinity 0 to 10, B vice versa; ucrit = critical swimming speed (BLs-1); Uopt = optimal swimming speed (µgO2 kg-1 BL-1); AS = aerobic scope (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); SAS = swimming aerobic scope (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); MMR = maximum metabolic rate (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); AMR = active metabolic rate (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); SMR = standard metabolic rate (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); 0/ESMR = extrapolated standard metabolic rate (mgO2 kg-1 h-1); Swim (0.5 - 5.5) = oxygen consumption rate at various swimming speeds (BL s-1). FW = Fresh Water, BW = Brackish Water, and EUP = European perch.

Methods:

Swimming respirometry and static respirometry trials on yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and European perch (Perca fluviatilis) originating from fresh and brackish water were conducted by means of intermittent-flow through respirometry. Yellow perch from brackish water were not obtained in the experiment. Yellow perch individuals were not repeated between the static and swimming experiments
