Abstract:

This study examined the influence of oil exposure on group dynamics in Atlantic croaker. Croaker were placed into an open field test for 20 minutes. Groups consisted of all controls, three controls with one exposed individual, or all exposed croaker. This dataset contains the videos for each group.

Purpose:

To investigate how oil exposure may influence group shoaling behavior.

Data Parameters and Units:

Group: cohort of four fish tested at one time (1-19); tag: colored tag for a specific fish (p: purple, y: yellow, g: green, o: orange); trtBROAD: broad, group-level treatment categorization (c: control, o: oil exposed, m: mixed group, one individual is exposed to oil the rest are controls); grouptrt: merged variable combining group and broad treatment; fish: merged fish ID combining group, treatment, and tag color; dose: dose of oil received by group (none, low, high); dose_ind: dose of oil received by individual (a, l, h); trtSPEC: specific treatment categorization, specifying high or low for groups receiving oil (control, low mix, low oil, high mix, high oil); untreat_type: level of treatment received by individuals not exposed to oil (c: control, mL: low mix, mH: high mix); TL: total length in cm; SL: standard length in cm; mass: mass in grams; speed: average speed in cm/s; speed_moving: average speed while in motion in cm/s; dist: total distance moved in cm; meanderREL: relative meander in degrees/cm; meanderABS: absolution meander in degrees/cm; NNmean: mean neighbor distance in cm; NNmin: nearest neighbor distance in cm; move: time spent moving in seconds; notmove: time spent motionless in seconds; distedge: mean distance from edge of the arena in cm.

Methods:

Prior to being used, croaker were anesthetized with 0.25 g MS-222 (buffered in 0.5 NAHCO3) before being PIT tagged with “MiniHPT8” tags. While anesthetized, fish were tagged with a bead and mass, standard length, and total length was taken. Before 18/07/2016 fish were exposed to 6.0 ± 0.8 mg PAH (0.7 % MASS HEWAF, or low oil and low mix) and starting on 18/07/2016 fish were exposed to oil concentrations of 32.9 ± 5.9 mg PAH (2.0% MASS HEWAF, or high oil and high mix). All videos were recorded on the GoPros mounted to a mic stand to capture the video from above the tank. GoPro only allows a maximum of 17 minutes in a single video before starting a new one. Since our measured period for the open field test is 20 minutes, GoPro started a second video (OpenFB) to capture the last 3 minutes. Video file name format: Group and number.Date(MM-DD-YYY).Test
