Abstract:

This study was examining the influence of oil exposure on Atlantic croaker hypoxia tolerance. Wild caught live croaker were purchased and placed into one of 3 treatment groups; control, low oil dose (1% MASS HEWAF), or high oil dose (2% MASS HEWAF). Croaker were then placed into an intermittent flow respirometer where aerobic scope in normoxic conditions and loss of equilibrium in hypoxic conditions were measured. Both oil doses showed a reduction in aerobic scope compared to the control group, however there was no significant difference in pcrit or time to loss of equilibrium between the groups.

Purpose:

To examine the influence of oil on hypoxia tolerance in Atlantic croaker.

Methods:

Prior to being used, croaker were anesthetized with 0.25 g MS-222 (buffered in 0.5 NAHCO3) before being PIT tagged with “MiniHPT8” tags. For Pcrit, Pcrit before exposure was taken for all fish. Fish were then placed into exposures of either control, 1% source WAF, or 2% source WAF. For aerobic scope, fish were chased for 3 minutes to exhaustion and air exposed for a minute prior to being placed into the respirometers.
