Abstract:

Interactions between a water soluble polymer and a surfactant/dopant system was studied using automatic continuous mixing (ACM) with light scattering, refractive index (RI), and viscometry. The concentration of the added polymer was changed and the resulting light scattering peaks were measured and compared. From this data it was found that polymers reduced the supramicellar assemblies as seen by the dramatic decrease in light scattering.

Purpose:

To show that supramicellar assemblies can exist near and below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of certain hydrophobic dopants in surfactant solutions.

Data Parameters and Units:

Units: Concentration SDS (g/mL)- This is the concentration of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water. The units are in g/mL. I(90) 2 mgml pvp 1mM NaCl- I(90) is the light scattering intensity measured by the 90 degree angle detector. The 'n' mgml pvp is the concentration of the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone in the SDS solution. The salt (NaCl) concentration is kept consistent over the different PVP concentrations at 1 mM. All of the PVP measurements following the above naming scheme, where only the concentration of PVP is changed.
