Abstract:

We researched the ability to fabricate nanoporous gold (NPG) disks of sub-wavelength diameter and sub-100 nm thickness to increase the plasmonic extinction and tunability of plasmon resonance of NPG. To fabricate NPG disks we used sputter deposition to deposit a film of gold and silver alloy onto a silicon wafer or glass slide using a target alloy of Ag82.5Au17.5. A monolayer of polystyrene beads ranging in size from 460-1100 nm was formed on top of the alloy. We separated the polystyrene beads using a timed oxygen plasma treatment. To transfer the bead pattern into the alloy film the sample was sputter-etched into argon plasma and then the beads were removed. To produce array format NPG disks, we used nitric acid, followed by a rinse in deionized water to dealloy the disks. We sonicated high density disk arrays on a 3 inch silicon wafer in deionized water to fabricate colloidal NPG disks. This dataset reports the extinction spectra for NPG disks with diameters of 300, 400, 500, and 700 nm in air and water and 400 nm diameters 75 nm thick Gold disks on glass substrates in air and water. The plasmonic peak position for localized surface plasmon resonance (690 nm), out-of-plane resonance (552 nm), and in-plane resonance (1100 nm) for NPG disks with diameters from 300-700 nm are reported. Our research also compared the in-plane dipole resonance peak positions measured from NPG and gold disks, and theoretical gold disks with different diameter/thickness ratios. The diameter/thickness ratios and resonance peak positions are presented in this dataset. Lastly extinction spectra are reported for 400 nm NPG disks in 6 solutions with varying refractive indices: water, ethanol, 3:1 ethanol-toluene, 1:1 ethanol-toluene, 1:3 ethanol-toluene, and toluene. The peak shifts are reported for 620 nm and 1311 nm at the 6 different refractive indices. This dataset is associated with the publication: Zhao, F., Zeng, J., Parvez Arnob, M. We studied the tunability of nanoporous gold disks as their composition, shape, and size impact the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties that affect their use in applications.
