Abstract:

Characteristics of laboratory-scale bubble-driven buoyant plumes in a stably stratified quiescent fluid are studied using large-eddy simulation (LES). This dataset consists of four LES cases with identical source buoyancy flux, but with four different bubble rise velocity (corresponding to different bubble diameters). Based on the dataset, the inner/outer double plume structure and the peel/intrusion process as well as their dependence on the bubble rise velocity are illustrated. A brief summary is given below: Physical parameters for the large-eddy simulation: Domain size of the LES: (0.76 x 0.76 x 0.9) m Water density: 1000.0 kg/m^3 Water viscosity: 1.08E-3 kg/(m s) Water density stratification: uniform density from surface to 0.1 m depth, and 50 kg/m^4 linear gradient below 0.1 m depth Buoyancy frequency in stratified region: 0.7 1/s Air bubble density: 1.4 kg/m^3 Air bubble releasing rate: 0.09 L/min Bubble releasing depth: z = -0.8 m Bubble rise velocities (four cases): 0.03 m/s (case WR3), 0.06 m/s (case WR6), 0.12 m/s (case WR12), and 0.20 m/s (case WR20) Simulation duration: 100 seconds
