Abstract:

This dataset covers GoMRI RFPII research performed at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) during 2016 in Dr. Chesney’s lab. This study was performed to compare field collected aged oil made into HEWAFs using NRDA methods with HEWAFs made with fresh Macondo by standard methods for HEWAF preparations.

Purpose:

The goal of the study was to assess differences in the makeup of HEWAFs made with different types of oil. The study provided a basis for comparing our HEWAF mixtures to other reported HEWAF preparations.

Methods:

These GCMS samples were made (1/25/2016) to compare various methods of making HEWAFs with different types (aged (A,B) fresh) of oil and at different makeup concentrations. All were Macondo source oils. Type A and B are the aged source oils collected in the field for NRDA. S samples were made with intact source Macondo (from BP). Numbers (1,2) represent replicates of a test makeup. S1, S2 samples of HEWAFs were prepared by adding 3 grams and 2xS1,S2 samples at 6 grams per liter of oil in 2 liters of 25 PSU seawater (oil to water ratios of 1.5:1000 and 3:1000). Oil-seawater solutions were mixed for 30 seconds in a waring blender and then settled in a separatory funnel for 1 hour before samples were drained from the bottom into 2 precleaned 1 liter sample jars. A and B HEWAFs were made following NRDA protocols with 1 grams of oil per liter of 25 psu seawater. The filtered sample was filtered with a Whatman no. 4 qualitative filter. Samples were analyzed by GCMS at Louisiana State University.

Instruments:

HEWAF analyte concentrations were estimated by GC/MS.
