Abstract:

This dataset has CTD and positional data from sediment grabs taken on the NOAA ship Pisces (2013) and Gordon Gunter (2014). Two shoreline collections from Louisiana and Alabama are included in the 2014 data. All sediment grabs on the NOAA cruises were made with a multicorer, unless a Shipek (R) grab is indicated. Samples from the multicorer tubes or the Shipek grab were subsampled to a depth of 5 cm. The two shoreline collections were taken to a depth of 25cm (Slidell Louisiana, shovel collection) or to a depth of 5cm (Dauphin Island, hand core). Sediment samples were sent to the Louisiana State University Ag center for granulometry analysis (2013 sediment). The 2014 sediment granulometry was analyzed at Troy University. PAH data was determined at Troy University. The data were collected at the same time as dataset R2.x222.000:0004, which reports trace metals from these same samples.

Purpose:

To determine PAH concentrations and sand fraction concentrations in sediment collected along the continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

PAHs are reported in ppb, granulometry in percentage for each sand fraction, start time (MM/DD/YY HH:MM), end time (MM/DD/YY), latitude (decimal degrees), longitude (decimal degrees), depth (m), sample depth (m), temperature, salinity, OXY-MG

Methods:

Sediment samples were collected using an Ocean Instruments mini-multicorer or a Shipek® grab sampler aboard the NOAA ships Gordon Gunter and Pisces, along the northern GOM continental shelf and slope. Samples were collected in Nov 2013 and Nov 2014. Sediment PAHs were determined using Soxhlet extraction with methylene chloride (EPA 3540C) and a Shimadzu GCMS at Troy University. Granulometry was determined at Louisiana State University and Troy University using a mechanical shaker and standard methods.
