Abstract:

This dataset contains the raw data (measurements made using a light microscope) to support the tables and discussion in the publication: Two new species of Echinoderes (Kinorhyncha: Cyclorhagida), E. romanoi sp. n. and E. joyceae sp. n., from the Gulf of Mexico.

Methods:

Sediment samples were collected along the United States’ Gulf of Mexico continental shelf during several cruises from 2010 to 2015. All samples taken from 2013-2015 were collected with a multi corer, whereas samples before that were taken with a Shipek® sediment grab on the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) ships Gordon Gunter, Pisces, and Oregon II, in collaboration with the National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The samples were fixed immediately in 5-10% formalin, and meiofauna was subsequently extracted by Ludox centrifugation. After sorting under a dissecting microscope, the specimens were stored in isopropanol until prepared for light microscopy (LM) or scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimens for LM were dehydrated through a graded series of glycerin and mounted in Fluoromount G. They were examined with an Olympus BX51 or a Nikon E600 microscope. Measurements were made with CellSens software.
