Abstract:

Seawater and sediment from multiple stations were incubated for remineralizing organic carbon. Three stations were sampled for seawater incubation and five stations were sampled for sediment incubation in 2014. Five stations were sampled for seawater incubation and six stations were sampled for sediment incubation in 2016.

Purpose:

To examine stable isotope of remineralizing organic carbon in both the water column and sediments.

Methods:

Near-surface and near-bottom water were collected using Niskin bottles at selected sites near the Mississippi River mouth. Water was subsampled into 7 40 milliliter boroscilicate EPA vials without headspace. In 2014 vials were submerged in a flowing water bath of ~ 30 degrees Celsius; in 2016 the water bath was at room temperature. The vials were not exposed to light. In 2014 a vial was injected with 100 microliters of mercury chloride every 12 hours and sacrificed, in 2016 a vial was sacrificed this way every 24 hours. Samples were analyzed for dissolved inorganic carbon and delta 13C dissolved inorganic carbon. Sediments were sampled using a box corer and homogenized with bottom water. Sediment slurry was subsampled in to 7 40 milliliter borosiliate EPA vials. Sediments were homogenized by inversions twice daily. Vials were submerged using the same methods as the water samples. However, the incubation was then stopped and water overlying sediments was sampled through a 0.45 micron nylon disc. In 2014 samples were filtered every 12 hours, while in 2016 samples were filtered every 24 hours. Standard for delta 13 C reference material is USGS40.
